China Daily is the only English-language newspaper in China. According to its website, it sells over 200,000 copies, a third of which are overseas. It was founded in 1981, and is

published Monday through Saturday, in about 150 countries in the world, including the United States and several European countries. In light of the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the paper decided to publish an edition in Argentina. This special edition includes regular feature stories, related to science, arts and sports, but its main focus is extensive coverage of President Xi’s visit to Argentina, as well as numerous other articles on different topics related to the Leaders’ Summit.

President Xi’s state visits are the paper’s main topic. Prior to his arrival in Argentina, he was in Spain, and following the G20 Summit, he will travel to Panama, before heading to Portugal. The paper’s headline reads: “Xi heads to G20, call for its role to grow.” There is also an analysis of the G20 and the topics that will be discussed: for the China Daily, “trade and global prosperity” will be priorities.

One of the articles addresses how, according to Argentine President Mauricio Macri, this G20 Summit is a chance for Latin America to demonstrate the contributions the region can make to the rest of the world. The G20 coverage also includes a long interview with Yang Wanming, China’s ambassador in Argentina.

The China Daily is seen as a guide to understanding Chinese government policy. Its editorials, though, are more liberal than the average Chinese newspaper.
